Birth
Approximately a thousand years before the events of the series, Marceline was born to a demon lord named Hanson Abadeer and a human woman named Elise . Abadeer is the ruler of the Nightosphere .
Marceline Abadeer ( Marceline Soulsucker in Spain and also known as Marceline the Vampire Queen ) or simply Marcy , is one of the main characters of Adventure Time and the protagonist of the miniseries Stakes .
.
She is outgoing and likes to play a lot of pranks, as shown in the second episode where Marceline meets Finn (calling him Lackey ). In the episode she plays pranks on him by making him believe that she is evil. In addition, she likes to hide in Finn and Jake’s house.
Marceline was the typical villain at the beginning of the series, but throughout the series she has changed. Nowadays she is more friendly, as has been shown in the last episodes.
She is one of the two characters in the series that usually changes their hairstyle and outfit in almost every episode (The second is Princess Bubblegum ). S
. She sings, composes and plays her Bass-Axe , and her only friend as a child was Huambo , her teddy bear given to her by the Ice King (When he was still conscious as Simon Petrikov ) when they met and survived together after the Mushroom War .
The Mushroom Wars
Marceline and her mother survived the events of the Mushroom War, a mysterious and destructive war that ravaged the earth a thousand years prior to the events of the series. One of Marceline’s earliest depicted childhood memories is of her living in a trailer with her human mother, who tells her the story of how she met her father. Marceline’s mother suffered from an illness, however, she attempted to hide it from Marceline so as not to worry her. She asked her to draw a map of the earth to get to a secret “clubhouse” where a party was supposedly taking place. However, as
Elise’s health worsened further, and she told Marceline to go to the hideout alone, leaving her to believe that her mother had abandoned her due to her demonic powers. The hideout contained many skeletons of other humans, and they likely suffered a fate similar to Elise’s illness.
During this time, Simon Petrikov—the man who would become the Ice King after succumbing to the power of his crown—found Marceline in the ruins of a city and gave her a stuffed animal named Huambo to cheer her up. At this point, he was apparently 7 years old, as he stated. The two developed an affectionate relationship, but the crown ruined Simon’s mental health, forcing him to leave Marceline alone. During this period, Simon presumably managed to reunite Marceline with her father, possibly by invoking him traditionally, only to feel disgusted by his cold and ruthless behavior. Although Simon attempted to tolerate Abadeer’s evil and selfish antics, he eventually cut all ties after catching him eating potato chips that Marceline had bought for herself.
Becoming the Vampire Queen
Over the next few years, Marceline wandered the Land of Ooo, eventually befriending a tribe of humans. These humans wore animal hats, presumably to hide the fact that they were human. At first, they were understandably afraid of Marceline, however, after following them for some time, one member of the group, Tom Two-Loaf, sat down and played guitar to the few remaining members of her group. Marceline overheard this, and sat behind a bush to play the same song that Tom was playing.
Because of this, they saw Marceline in a brighter light, and realized that she was only trying to keep them safe. She became their guardian and ally, and helped them kill vampires, who had taken over much of the land . [8] Marceline soon discovered that, by killing a vampire, she could gain their unique abilities thanks to their demonic power to absorb souls. The human tribe was attacked by the Vampire King while they were repairing a boat, and Marceline defended them. However, when she tried to fight the Vampire King herself, he pinned her down and bit her. Although she eventually managed to kill him, she was turned in the process and became the last vampire in Ooo. At some point she adopted a red poodle, which she sucked the red out of, but she managed to save it thanks to the Enchiridion and it turned white and zombie-like.
Wandering the earth
At some point, Marceline met Princess Bubblegum , the ruler of the Candy Kingdom . Marceline gifted her a Rock T-shirt during a musical performance and they became romantically involved. The two often avoided official royal gatherings and explored the Candy Kingdom’s elaborate rock candy mining complex instead, though as time went on and the increasing stress of running the Candy Kingdom became more and more demanding, Bonnibel began to push Marceline away. Marceline’s song managed to defeat the dragon, but this meant the end of the relationship between her and Bonnie. The animosity between them would last for many years.
Marceline eventually comes into contact with Finn and Jake when she forces them to leave their home. However, she returns it to him after finding the cave where they found a better place for her. After this, Marceline tricks Finn into becoming her accomplice. However, Finn soon discovers that Marceline is not evil, but rather likes mischief and pranks. Soon after, the two develop a friendship. However, the duo soon learn that it was an elaborate trick by Ash; Finn and Jake actually removed Marceline’s memory of their breakup. In the end, Finn is able to convince Marceline, and promptly attacks her sexist ex-boyfriend .
Some time later, Marceline enlists the help of Princess Bubblegum , and the two are able to track down Maja, the titular Sky Witch. It is revealed that Ash sold Huambo to Maja the Sky Witch . Only when Bonnie trades her beloved rock t-shirt, given to her by Marceline, is Huambo able to reunite with Marceline .

The Great Rubber War
Marceline fights for Princess Bubblegum during the “Great Rubber War”, and when the chaos deity GOLB accidentally enters Ooo, she refuses to abandon her friend. After one of GOLB’s monstrosities nearly kills the princess, Marceline rushes to her side, and after a tender moment, the two claim that they love each other and share a kiss. Following their escape from GOLB, Marceline comforts Simon following the loss of Betty. During the episode’s epilogue, Marceline and Bonnie are shown sitting together on a couch under a blanket while watching a puppet story, with both touching each other’s heads.
Living with the love of his life
A few years later, Princess Bubblegum moved in with Marceline when they received a call back to the Crystal Kingdom after the dragon reappeared, forcing Marceline to confront her past. When her old song fails to stop the dragon, she seeks inspiration for an even sadder, angrier song by revisiting the old hideout her mother had sent her to as a child. Instead of finding anger, she discovers a sense of acceptance. When they become trapped in a cave and face possible death, she sings a love song that affirms her love for Bonnie. This song reaches the dragon, who then releases her true self, no longer posing a danger to the kingdom.
A few years later, in ” Simon Petrikov “, Marcy and Bonnie are still a fairly stable couple and get couple tattoos together. However, due to Marcy’s regenerating skin and Bonnie’s rubbery skin, neither of them can get a tattoo, annoying the tattoo artist. Simon tries to talk to her on the phone but she can’t hear him, so he decides not to bother her but save her worries by seeing how fine she is now.
Species
Marceline is known as a vampire, but she wasn’t always one. Marceline Alterna claimed to be half demon. It can be said that Marceline is a hybrid:
- Demon: on his father ‘s side .
- Human: on his mother ‘s side .
- Vampire: Since she was bitten by the Vampire King while she was trying to kill him.
- She was previously considered a half-human, half-demon hybrid, however she is currently a half-vampire, half-demon hybrid.
-
Appearance
Marceline has pale skin with a greenish-blue tint that sometimes turns grayish. She has very dark blue hair that reaches her ankles. She is tall and very thin and her eyes can change color depending on her mood.
Marceline is also a smart and stylish vampire. She has two red marks on her neck caused by the bite of the person who turned her into a vampire. She usually likes to bother Finn and Jake and usually hides in the tree house where they both live.
Personality
Marceline describes herself as a wild rock chick. She likes to play practical jokes and tease people. After centuries of wandering the Land of Ooo she has become a fearless adventurer. She is a lover of all things exotic and still roams the land often.
She has a mischievous personality, and is not intimidated by anything. Despite appearing mean at first, Marceline is a trickster at heart, and her evil schemes often turn out to be nothing more than elaborate pranks, not to mention her fondness for trespassing in other people’s homes such as those of Finn , Jake, and the Ice King . She is described by Finn as a nice girl who loves karaoke . She appears to have a strained relationship with her father.
Although she may seem rude, she can be very emotional, which she expresses through her songs. She also values friendship and the time she spends with her closest friends.
As seen in ” Obsidian ”, she is rude because she believed that her mother abandoned her when she was a child (Not knowing that she had died). Because of this she grew up with anger in love and found pain in it, which had strongly affected her relationship with Princess Bubblegum (Relationship that she later rekindled). But as can be seen, she has changed emotionally, but still retains her being.

Weaknesses
- Typical vampire weaknesses. It is worth noting that while she is vulnerable to sunlight, as is common in vampire lore, she does not immediately dissolve. The nuance of this in the world of Adventure Time is that vampires are specifically vulnerable to direct sunlight . Marceline is able to move around unrestricted on a sunny day as long as she protects herself sufficiently, which she usually accomplishes with a combination of a parasol and a large sun hat, sometimes with the addition of long gloves to cover her arms. According to Marceline, moving around on a sunny day still hurts her mildly, comparable to scraping her knee, but she can endure it.
- Like typical vampires, Marceline cannot see her own reflection in a mirror.
- She has revealed that she cannot digest syrup.
- Whenever she does not consume enough red objects, Marceline enters “feral mode”, a state in which she becomes rabid from hunger. This rabid state disappears once Marceline consumes a sufficient amount of red.
Relations
Marceline has a close relationship with both Finn and Jake . They have many things in common; in the episodes ” Eviction! ” and ” Lackey “, it is stated that the reason Marceline became friends with Finn is that he likes being himself. Although she has platonically kissed Finn on the cheek twice, Ward has noted that there is no romantic subtext between the two. On the other hand, They share a more complex relationship. In her initial appearances, she took pleasure in scaring Jake, who was terrified “of her vampire bite”. In turn, Jake sensed that she was evil and had managed to take over Finn’s mind. Because of this, Jake attempted to kill her several times, to no avail. However, after the events of “Henchman”, Jake seems to have forgotten his fear of her; in “Memory of a Memory”, he even refers to her as a “friend” in one of his memories.
At the beginning of the series, Marceline shares a strained relationship with Princess Bubblegum . However, as the show progressed, their relationship developed and changed. Marceline was the first person to address Bubblegum by her name, Bonnibel, which occurred in the episode “Go With Me”. In the spin-off series Distant Lands episode “Obsidian,” set some years later with Finn shown as a grown man, Marceline and Bonnibel live together in Marceline’s cave and share an explicitly romantic relationship. The episode also confirms that they had previously been in a relationship, and the flashbacks reveal their breakup.
Marceline and her father, Hanson Abadeer , have trouble accepting each other. Initially, Marceline believes that her father does not care about her and expresses her feelings through the aforementioned ” Potato Song “. Although they admit that they love each other, Abadeer constantly pressures Marceline to stay in the family business and take over ruling the Nightosphere, a potential job that Marceline does not want.
Marceline and the Ice King also have a complicated relationship. In the episode ” I Remember You “, it is revealed that the Ice King, then the human male named Simon Petrikov, discovered her crying in the ruins of a city destroyed by the Mushroom Wars. It was Simon who handed little Marceline over to Hambo and attempted to watch over her. This kind gesture made the Ice King an old close friend and father figure to Marceline.
- However, as the crown’s power grew, Simon began to increasingly forget about his relationship with Marceline until he nearly forgot their friendship. Former storyboard artist and series showrunner Adam Muto explained that Marceline and the Ice King’s story was not part of the series’ initial plan, but something that “evolved from the original course [of the show] and will likely continue to evolve in the future.” The Distant Lands spin-off shows Simon eventually coming around and maintaining a close relationship with Marceline.

Other Appearances
Marceline’s gender-swapped counterpart, “Marshall Lee,” is voiced by actor and musician Donald Glover.
The show introduced Marshall Lee in the third season episode “Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake.” This version of the character made a small cameo and had no lines. Later, the creators announced another episode featuring Fionna and Cake for the fifth season, with a plot largely revolving around Marshall Lee. The episode, titled “Bad Boy,” aired on February 18, 2013. In this episode, the princesses captured by the Ice King grew tired of his poorly written Fionna and Cake fan fiction stories. Marceline visited the Ice Kingdom to show him how to do it properly and told a story involving her gender-swapped character, Marshall Lee. Donald Glover voiced the character. Additionally, Marshall Lee made a cameo in Fionna and Cake’s third episode, titled “The Prince Who Wanted It All,” and had a speaking role in the fourth episode, “Five Short Tables.”
Marceline also appears in the iOS game Adventure Time: Rock Bandits . In the context of the game, the Ice King kidnaps Marceline’s fans at a concert to be his fans. Finn and Jake must then free the captured citizens. Marceline appears as a playable character in the video game Lego Dimensions ,
